Dear family, friends, sponsor's
Massive thank you to all the people that have Sponsored, Liked, Shared, Donated to Ampcampkids sending children with limb difference to Tenerife for a holiday of lifetime at ampcampkids Your kind donations are going to make such a difference to young Amputees. So from Me, the Team, the Kids and Ben Lovell Thank you all so much

I went to Climb Ingleborough in 2021 With an Amazing and inspirational man Ben Lovell and his lovely Family and the Team AmpCamp Mountain Climbers that day changed my life I have met the most fantastic people throughout the pass couple of years done things that I thought I could only dream about I would like to say Massive Thanks to Ben Lovell his Family and everyone that I have met on this journey you have all helped me so much love to you all

I am a Double Below Knee Amputee since November 2008. Having a Bilateral Below Knee Amputation is a life changing event but your life does not have to come to end it can be a start of a new beginning. For me it made a massive change in my life. I have Walked, Pushed my Wheelchair, climbed and Crawled up mountains to help raise money for AmpcampKids. For me it has opened up doors that would not have been there. It has gave me my children and my wife Jackie a better quality of life together which for me is priceless

My Story
After a motorway accident in 1992 it left me with spinal injuries and two badly broken legs which were shattered in small pieces at the time they question where I might have two remove my legs but they decided to save them both legs were put in traction which was steel rods going through both heals with wire and weight on the ends to try and get my bones in my legs to reline and hopefully knit together I was in traction for about six months and some healing had taken place so I was then put in plaster and had a plate put in my right leg I was given the decision to have my ankles fused because they had not reunited and I would not be able to walk I said no so I was sent home in two full length plaster cast to think about it

I had sent about 8 months in hospital so I was glad to get out of hospital…so I was at home with two full length plaster casts on my legs most of my time was spent on my bed with had a chemical toilet at the head of the bed which lifted myself on two which was not idea but had no choice after a few months I decided two have my ankles fused so it was back to hospital for the operation which has done the back in full length casts few months later I was put in half length resin casts….

I had been laid up for over a year and had to learn how two walk again which took a while which was spent in physiotherapy between two bars and catching a ball after about two years both legs were put in callipers after a few months the left calliper was removed and a few month after the right calliper was removed they suspected a none union in the right leg which they said they could operate again but I said no so for more or less three years I spent in a wheel chair and on crutches could not stand or walk for two long because I was in severe pain….then I spent a lot of my time in a gym getting my fit which I did a good job. I worked round my injuries a got in good shape I went from 17 stone of fat two 10 stone …over the past few years I have put on four stone back up to 14 stone.

I have really suffered with back pain loss of feelings in my legs and suffer from server pain when I walk and stand I have also picked up a break in my right leg since Christmas 2008.

Also I would like to thank all the staff and Doctors at Warrington hospital for all their care and input in over the Years. Getting me up and back on my feet

Why Amputation

Well for me it’s because I have spent 16 years of my life always in pain in which I had a few years where I did a lot more than I do now I was still in pain but enjoyed life a lot more

over the past two years I have lost more of my mobility and have been in more pain than I had been in for years, pain when I stand, more pain when I walk pain when I get up from sitting down struggling to walk, climbing stairs, because my right leg is deformed it is making my knee and hip out of line and cause me all sorts of problems with my back, its also causing arthritis in my knee and in my back.

My left leg is out of line but not as bad as my right and that is giving me problems with my knee and hip as well, there is Osteoporosis in my legs and I have picked up a fracture in my right leg below the knee not sure where from, I am concerned that I might fracture my leg / legs which might cause issues in its self and I am worried about circulation in my legs when I get older.

What I hope to get out of this operation is to get my new legs and start to get my fitness levels back up and start getting out more and enjoying life with wife Jackie and my children Rebecca and Rosie and hope I might be in less pain but that’s not guaranteed but where there’s hope you never know.

The Talk With The Doctor

We got referred to the Surgeon (B) who will be doing the operation after the surgeon who has been looking after my back problems, had looked at my legs in A & E after I had got a lot more problems with my right leg at Christmas the leg was x-rayed he suspected a fracture on the right leg so it was put in plaster. He discussed relining both legs and putting steel rods though my heels up into my legs he then referred me for a mi scan which took a few weeks for the appointment to arrive the mi scan showed the right leg has got a fracture in it above the ankle...both of my legs are in a sorry state he thought that surgeon (B) would be better, because the state my leg were in and that was more his field of work.

few weeks later we went to see surgeon (B) who looked at my legs and at the mi scan we discussed how much pain I was in and talk about surgery on the legs which would see me laid up for quite a long time no guarantee it would be a success and further problems might arise because my skin on my feet is damaged and is in bad condition so...then came the option of amputation

which was a shock....even though I had thought about it myself for a long time because I can be in very bad pain to severe pain which varies from day today which can make you feel low in mood and a bit grumpy some days more than others. It was upsetting to actually discuss it with surgeon (B) he thought it would be for the best which I agreed he said losing your legs is not the end its a new beginning and with prosthetic legs would be a new start which I agree....he said that I needed to go for a second opinion...he said by law he has to send me for a second opinion on whether to amputate...which could take 8 month to a year so we left and waited for the appointment ....

Jackie was upset and cried for days I myself have try to look on the positive side of things I have had my moments when on my own and got and get upset. I just can’t get the children out of my head and how will they cope and react. Rebecca is three years old and Rosie is 10 months old I am scare of the operation in case I get an infection and don’t make it back out of the hospital....and I won’t see the children again. Also because of the pain I might be in after the operation. But that’s me I always look on the bad side of things ....but the positives out way the bad so its full steam ahead just got to go for the second opinion.

The Second Opinion

The second opinion came in about six weeks which in its self was a big shock we thought about 8 months but I was glad to be getting it sorted sooner, waiting from 8 months to a year would have drove me potty the second opinion was at the royal Liverpool the appointment was at 1.30pm we got there 2 hours early so we would not get stuck in traffic so we had loads of tea till the appointment

The surgeon was the best in his field and was a nice guy he sent us for an x-ray which was a pain because my back was playing up so roaming about to get my legs x-rayed gave me a lot of grief ..Then back to the surgeon who looked at my legs and the x-rays we disused how they were causing me problems...

He said there's and couple of options, Amputation, Surgery to reline my legs but no guarantee of success or Leave them alone...the surgeon said that there was no clear option on which one was best .he thought it would be a good idea to send me to a limb fitting centre to see how people cope with new limbs and to get an idea what they look like which I thought was a good idea as well

So we left and waited for the appointment and we would then go back to the surgeon in the royal Liverpool hospital to let him know what I wanted to do with my legs.

We got the appointment for limb fitting centre which took about 2 weeks it was at clatterbridge hospital

The appointment was first thing in the morning, there we saw the limb fitting doctor and he discussed
How I get about and what pain I was in from day to day we discussed my options he said that below the knee would be done above the knee would not be an option, he said that walking with below the knee amputations would be a lot easier than above the knee amputations,

I would struggle to walk 20 yards with above the knee amputations he asked how I felt in myself I was showed a prosthetic leg and how it would be fitted we spent over two hours with him he was really nice and gave us a lot of his time We left there, to go home and phone the royal Liverpool hospital to go and see the surgeon there.

When we got home. We phoned up the royal Liverpool hospital for an appointment to go back and see the surgeon to let him know what I was going to do with my legs.

We got the appointment back to the royal which took about three weeks once there we saw the surgeon again and told him that my decision was to have my legs amputated below the knees,

One question I wanted to know was because my knees are bad and can cause me a lot of problems could I get a replacement knees if I have my legs amputated he said that they could replace my knees so that was a relief and that was my mind made up

we said thanks for his time and he wished us good luck in the future he said he would refer me back to see the surgeon at Warrington for the operation. Me and Jackie would like to thank everyone that has had helped us and thanks for the speed at which we are now going back to the surgeon at Warrington

Date Set For Operation

We went back to Warrington Hospital to see the surgeon who is going to do the operation we talk about the Options one of my concerns was the anasectic and not waking up. So we have decided to have an epidural For the operation which means that I will be awake for the operation.

He said that having an epidural Might lessen the chance of getting phantom limb pain which has got to be a bonus...he has also gave me a date For the operation I go in on the 3rd of November and have the operation on the 5th which is not far of now

I have got my head round it now, In a funny sort of way I am looking forward to having the operation and getting My new legs and hope that I get no phantom limb pain and I will be pain free.....I have been in pain every day for about 20 years .

For the pass few month I have been getting things sorted for the operation I have sent my car back Which would have not been suitable after the operation...getting the small room ready for when I come home, I have put sky in there so I can what TV etc...

As far as getting things done round the house the council can't doing anything to the house i.e. modifications till social services have been round and told them what needs doing ...headache they will Not come out to look at the house till I have my operation...seems a bit daft to me...

Operation Day

3rd of November .. Went in today at 9.30 had to wait till about 12.00pm before I was given a bed on the day ward had my bloods done, blood pressure and pulse. My surgeon came and said hello and asked how I was we talked a bit about support groups near me he said he would get me a number to ring I said thanks

about 1.30pm I was took to the room was I was going to be given an epidural I was told to get to the edge of the bed had to put my feet on a stool and had to bend forward there was a nurse who was in front of me he was really nice he was talking to me to take my mind of the epidural to say I was nervous would be an understatement I felt something cold on my back I think it was where they cleaned the site

he said there will a scratch then he told me to relax then I think he put the line in which for me was uncomfortable I was a bag of nerves and shaking then it was done the line was put on my shoulder into the line would go the epidural which I think was 6 mm every hour I had a cup of tea in the recovery room then my surgeon cane back with that phone number which i thought was nice

my legs started to feel a bit numb at four pm staff were very helpful and kind I was talking rubbish because I was a bag of nerves and then sent up to the ward there they gave me ice tests whit ice cubes to see how much I was numb and how far up it was travelling if it moves up further they will insert a catheter for my water works but not keen on that but if it needs doing then it has to be done staff brilliant and understanding 5.45 pm missing Jackie and Rebecca and Rosie

4th of November .. spent my time thinking about the operation looking back on my past and hoping all goes well with the operation had my blood pressure done throughout the day

my epidural drip had started to where off and I had normal feeling in my right side my left leg from top to bottom was numb I was going to have the operation done awake but my mine concern was my right side was not numb and I did not want to go down for the operation and them trying to sort out numbing my legs and it not working

so when my surgeon came round I said that I think it would be best if I was put sleep to save all the probable messing about he said that he would put me to sleep I was worried about that but it was best all round had visitors in the afternoon and night, then settled down for the night ready for the operation nothing to eat after midnight

5th OPPERATION DAY .. Today I was just wanting to get down as soon as I could to get it all over with there were two people going down for surgery before me.

I phoned Jackie and told her that I loved her and Rebecca and Rosie And if it all went wrong to make sure the kids were ok……mmmmmmmm

They came about 2pm and took me down to theater where I swapped beds they put some monitors on me they were all really nice my surgeon came in asked was I ok and told me all will be fine. the staff then said they were going to put a few thing into the line in my hand I think he said one was a for pain but not sure then one to put me a sleep

I said before you do that if it all goes wrong tell Jackie I love her and the little ones they said all will be fine. In went the first injection then he put the next one in and said I will start to feel sleepy I felt I buzzing round me then I was gone

Post Operation

woke up in the recovery room I was in quite a bit of pain I think they thought that I would be pain free they had a look at my epidural and it had slipped half way out so they took it I was asked if I wanted and injection in both legs to help with the pain there was a very small chance of nerve damage so I said leave it they put a drip in my arm which had a button for pain relief which I had to push when needed after I had settled down I was took back to ward

I asked the nurse to tell my family to go home because I was in a lot of pain so Jackie gave me a kiss and they all went I think it was about 7.00pm

at 11.00pm or so I was in a lot more pain I was climbing the walls the drip in my hand was leaking and was not getting any pain relief doctor was called she was up fast and sorted it out within 10 minute or so I was comfortable I was pushing the button every minute or so even though it would release the pain relief every 5 minutes I had pain relief also buy mouth the morphine base one was every 2 hour if needed the other one was every four hours I could also have and paracetamol drip as well every four hours will was really good at relieving the pain I had a comfortable night

Kids Comments

Rebecca who was three in august 2008

We asked our health visitor what was the best way to approach Rebecca with me having both my legs amputated below the knee she said that she would get further advice and get back in touch which she did

We was told to tell Rebecca that I have poorly legs which Rebecca new about because the way I walked and because I could be in a lot of pain sometimes and to tell Rebecca that the hospital was going to take my legs off  because they were broke and that they would give me new ones a bit later on after they had took them off Rebecca seem to accept this and went around saying that my dad will be getting new legs and will be able to chase ....me in the park,,

We told Rebecca that when I came out of hospital that I might be a bit sore and that she would have to be careful around me

With our Rosie had just turn one there was no need to say anything to her because she was so young and she would be ok with things

After the operation I would not let Jackie bring the children because of the rise of them catching an infection from the hospital which can be quite high I am lend to be leave

When I came home our Rebecca was quite distant with me and would not come near me saying that she did not want to hurt me and would often say to Jackie poor daddy

When Rebecca was near me and Jackie she would look at my stumps on the quite

I think that because we had said that she would have to be careful around me when I came home from hospital because I would be sore has played on Rebecca's mind

We tried all sorts to get Rebecca to sit on my knee to give me a kiss or to give me a love but there was no chance she was scared of hurting me

Its only the past two weeks from 22nd of January that Rebecca has started to sit on my knee and to give me a love we had to keep telling Rebecca that that she would not hurt me

The start of this week she has started to play around pretending to fight with me and playing around pushing the wheel chair even now Rebecca keeps saying that I will get new legs soon it's been hard work up to now with Rebecca and hopefully now things will start to get a bit easier for Rebecca

Yorkshire Three Peaks

ON THE DAY OF THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS

I did Pen-y-ghent and Whernside. they rerouted from Pen-y-ghent to Whernside to miss the bogs for safety because the weather had been bad this added about 1.8 miles on to the challenge. I got to check point 5 not far of 20 miles the organisers stopped the challenge for safety reasons and to prevent any chance of walkers becoming stranded in the evening The support I had from the marie curie team was fantastic they stayed with me all the way. I was really upset when I got pulled from the event I had to hold back the tears I had been through so much pain I wanted to carry on. I found it hard climbing up the mountains but coming down was a lot more easier than mount snowdon last year because I used my crutches which was a big help at the moment I feel drained sore and not to good and very emotional my stumps are not in too good of a shape but are ok . Big thanks to marie curie it was a great day it was hard and tuff your guys on the ground martin, john, dan, mat, dave were fantastic the help and support they gave me on the way round was priceless thanks guys, and a big thanks to every one involved in Organizing this event. FUNDRAISING FOR BEN LOVELL'S AMPCAMPKIDS SINCE 2021
THE THREE PEAKS CRAWL FOR AMPCAMPKIDS
Supported by Cotswold Outdoor And Led By Joe's Giants

TEAM WORK MAKES DREAM WORK
THANKS TO BEN LOVELL AND ALL THE  AMPCAMP TEAM YOU MADE THIS ALL POSSIBLE

Double amputee Paul Ellis recently completed his incredible challenge of crawling to the summits
of Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike in less than a year.

You’ve all heard of the National Three Peaks Challenge. Many of you have probably done it, or at least climbed one or more of the peaks involved. What we’re pretty sure of, though, is that none of you have done it quite like Paul Ellis.
At 6.30am on 27 August 2022, double amputee Paul set off on the final stage of his quest to climb the highest mountains in Wales, Scotland and England, aiming for the 978m summit of Scafell Pike. By 2.30pm, with cut hands and knees and a sore back, his challenge was complete. He’d crawled the Three Peaks Challenge in less than a year. Paul, from Widnes in Cheshire, began his challenge last summer by climbing Snowdon in an epic 16-hour adventure to raise money for the charity Amp Camp Kids. He then followed that up in April by crawling to the snow-clad summit of Ben Nevis in just 12 hours. Despite being the smallest of the Three Peaks, Scafell Pike’s loose scree slopes and boulder fields are unforgiving terrain for any walker – let alone one making the climb on hands and knees. Paul raised over £500 in cash on Scafell Pike alone, thanks to donations from hillwalkers placed into the buckets carried by Paul’s supporters. And when he reached the summit, he was presented with a superhero medal by one of his young companions. Supported by Cotswold Outdoor Led by Joe's Giants

A sleeve creates a seal around the top edge of the socket, then a pump and exhaust valve remove virtually all air between the socket and the liner as you wear them. The system regulates the vacuum level within a defined range. Vacuum enhances how well your socket adheres to your limb, which reduces shear, regulates residual-limb volume changes and improves circulation in your limb.

Comfort. Vacuum and suction both require a total-surface-bearing socket, which distributes even pressure on your residual limb throughout every square inch of the socket’s surface area. That pressure relief alone makes these suspension systems more comfortable. The superior connection with vacuum, allowing minimal movement of the limb in the socket, makes it the most comfortable. Suction ranks second in linkage. Shuttle-lock systems offer the least control of forces and allow the most movement and rubbing in the socket, the cause of calluses, blisters and sores.

Performance. Vacuum offers the highest performance for maximum confidence and prosthetic control, which promotes a smoother, more symmetrical gait that uses less energy. Shuttle-lock systems fulfill the needs of users with a low activity level, but users with a high activity level probably would notice a lack of control and security.

Limb health. Vacuum excels at limb health. Vacuum actually increases hydration and blood flow, so open wounds can heal even while you continue wearing the prosthesis. In addition, vacuum helps regulate volume changes in your leg as tissues shrink or expand during the day. As a result, your limb retains its size and shape all day, which helps to maintain a consistent fit.

In contrast, other suspension systems constrict blood vessels, causing leg volume to drop an average of 10 to 14 percent as fluids are squeezed out of your leg throughout the day. A prosthesis that fits tightly in the morning will loosen as the day progresses. Too much movement within a socket can cause pain, blistering and sores. Movement in and out of the socket can lead to repetitive impact forces as the socket slides during while you’re lifting your leg to take a step and pounds it back onto your limb when you put weight on your foot again.

With vacuum and suction, your daily routine includes rolling on a liner and shorter prosthetic sock; sliding into the socket; rubbing lotion on your leg at the top of the liner to prevent dragging on the skin; and rolling up the sleeve attached to the socket’s perimeter to create a seal with the liner.

Because there’s no need to modify the fit throughout the day, active vacuum may save on total time. Either way, most users say the morning regimen is worth it to enjoy the all-day benefits.
